1% for Armenia's mountains
We sculpt Armenia's mountains in glass. It seemed only right to give something back to the real ones.
1% of every GAGAT Glass sale goes to FPWC - the Foundation for the Preservation of Wildlife and Cultural Assets - to protect wild land in the south of Armenia.
Not 1% of profit. 1% of every sale, whether we have a good year or a bad one.
What your glass protects
Every tumbler glass protects ca. 200 m² of wildlife habitat for a year - roughly the size of a tennis court.
High between Sevazhayr and Dahnak, in Vayots Dzor, that land is leased from the villages that live beside it and patrolled by rangers of the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge. No fences against people - the communities keep their land and are paid for it. What changes is that the poaching stops, the overgrazing stops, and the wildlife comes back.
A set of three glasses or one decanter protects 600 m². Fifty glasses protect a hectare.
Who FPWC are
FPWC is an Armenian foundation that has been working to protect the country's wildlife since 2002. Rather than campaigning from a distance, they took a direct approach: leasing land from mountain communities and turning it into the Caucasus Wildlife Refuge, Armenia's first privately protected area.
The refuge is home to the Caucasian leopard - one of the rarest big cats on earth, with only a handful left in Armenia - as well as brown bears, bezoar goats, and golden eagles. FPWC also runs a rescue centre for wild animals saved from captivity, and works with local schools and villages so that conservation is something the region does, not something done to it.
Why this, and not something else
Our glasses carry Ararat, Aragats and Khustup. They exist because those mountains mean something - to Armenians at home, and to Armenians who see them only in photographs.
But a mountain isn't only a silhouette. It's forest, water, and the animals that have lived there far longer than any of us. Armenia's wild places are under real pressure, and the leopard on Khustup is closer to disappearing than most people realise.
Protecting them felt more honest than printing a mountain on a box and calling it heritage.
A rotating partnership
Armenia is full of organisations doing quietly extraordinary work - reforesting bare hillsides, protecting wildlife, restoring what has been lost.
Rather than commit to one forever, we rotate. Every partnership runs for a fixed period, and then we hand the 1% to another organisation, so the support spreads and more of this work becomes visible to people who would never otherwise hear about it.
